Hippolytus (play) Hippolytus (Ancient Greek: Ἱππόλυτος, Hippolytos) is an Ancient Greek tragedy by Euripides, based on the myth of Hippolytus, son of Theseus. The play was first produced for the City Dionysia of Athens in 428 BC and won first prize as part of a trilogy. The play begins when the goddess Aphrodite appears and explains that she has grown angry. Hippolytus, she explains, the bastard son of Theseus, has devoted himself too fully to virginity and the goddess Artemis, and arrogantly rejects the power of sexuality and desire.

We remember him as the doomed hero of a romantic idyll. 3.75 stars. Hippolytus is definitely one of my favourite plays by Euripides. I love how Euripides gives a human dimension to Greek Gods. No two Gods are as different as Artemis and Aphrodite, and their friction provided a great foundation for the drama that occurred.

The play is part of a larger commentary and myth sequence based on Hippolytus, and many stories focusing on Phaedra herself. Versions by Seneca the Younger ( Phaedra ), Ovid ( Metamorphoses and Heroides ), and the much later Jean Racine ( Phedre ) all contribute to our understanding of Hippolytus as a character and Hippolytus as a legend and play.

According to Hadas, Hippolytus is a beautiful poem, both poignant and compassionate. Oddly, Hippolytus is rarely seen throughout the play, making only very brief appearances. Most of the early dialogue of the play is between the queen and her nurse. In this play, which Kane described as her 'comedy, the action is set in a dystopian modernity and, in a reverse of Euripides', Seneca's and Racine's characterisation, Hippolytus is portrayed as a sexually promiscuous prince who uses sex to distract himself from the banality of his existence.
